Tragic Death of Shot Stray Dog Sparks Outcry Over Animal Welfare in Israel
A stray dog shot near Beit Aryeh died despite rescue efforts by S.O.S Pets, highlighting the alarming rise of violence against animals in Israel.
Late Sunday evening, the S.O.S Pets association received an urgent appeal regarding a stray dog suffering from a fresh gunshot wound near the community of Beit Aryeh in the western West Bank. Activists and volunteers rushed to rescue the gravely injured animal, but despite intensive medical efforts at the university veterinary hospital in Beit Dagan, the dog succumbed to its wounds.
A Cry for Help and Animal Welfare
Dafna Daoul, marketing and community relations manager at S.O.S Pets, expressed deep sorrow and frustration over the incident.
"The lives of animals in this country are abandoned. There is no deterrence, no enforcement, and above all, no compassion. Those who pay the terrible price are the animals," Daoul stated.
Bat El Levi, an activist from Yeruham who first raised the alarm, emphasized that dogs are neither enemies nor targets. The tragic incident highlights a growing and alarming phenomenon of stray dogs being shot across various regions, sparking widespread public and legal debate.
Official Responses and Broader Crisis
Following the incident, the Nature and Parks Authority stated that its inspectors had not been operating in the area recently. Meanwhile, Sharon Alfasi, head of the Beit Aryeh-Ofarim local council, noted that he was unaware of any shooting incidents within the council's jurisdiction during the reported timeframe. Animal rights advocates continue to demand stricter enforcement and legislative changes to halt the violence.
