Without causing damage: how to clean blinds using the 3-cloth method

Dust accumulates quickly, the slats are delicate, and using too much water or the wrong cleaner can do more harm than good. Here is how to do it right, step by step.

Anyone who has tried to clean blinds knows the frustration: you go over every single slat with a wet cloth, trying hard to remove the stains, but a few days later the dust returns – and sometimes even sticks stronger than before.

The reason for this lies in a common mistake that most of us make without noticing. The solution is simple, and it was recently presented by cleaning expert Brandon from the popular YouTube channel 'Clean That Up', where it was dubbed the "3-cloth method". Here is everything you need to know to finish this task quickly and keep the blinds clean for a long time.

Golden rule: always start with dust

Before you even consider adding water or cleaning agents, you must remove the dry dust. Contact of water with dust creates sticky mud that is very difficult to remove.

  • For regular blinds (plastic, wood, or aluminum): use a dust brush (like a Swiffer) that captures the dirt, and be sure to always work from top to bottom.

  • For fabric or "honeycomb" blinds: use a vacuum cleaner with a delicate brush head and vacuum slowly.

The mistake that makes blinds get dirty faster

The main secret in cleaning blinds lies in the understanding that soap residue is the enemy. When you use a cleaning agent and do not rinse it completely, it dries and leaves a sticky, invisible layer. This layer acts like a magnet that attracts dirt and dust from the air. Therefore, the rule of thumb is to use very little soap: a few drops of dish soap in a bucket of water will suffice for plastic and aluminum blinds, and one capful of a dedicated wood soap (like Murphy Oil Soap) will suffice for wooden blinds.

"3-cloth method" – step by step

This method ensures deep cleaning without leaving sticky traces or water marks. Prepare three separate cloths in advance:

  1. Cleaning cloth (soaping): dip the first cloth in a bucket with the cleaning agent and wring it out well, so that it is damp but not dripping. Go over the blind slats gently (so as not to bend them) and don't forget to clean the operating cords as well.

  2. Rinsing cloth (the most important step): this is the step where most people fail. Take the second cloth, dip it in a bucket with clean water only (without a drop of soap) and wring it out well. Wipe everything you have just soaped. This action removes the cleaning agent residue and prevents the blind from becoming a dust trap.

  3. Drying and polishing cloth: take a dry and clean microfiber cloth and go over the blinds to dry them completely. This step is necessary to prevent water marks, and it is especially critical if you have wooden blinds – leaving moisture on wood can cause warping and irreversible damage.

When is it forbidden to use this method?

It is important to emphasize: the three-cloth method is intended for rigid blinds only. Do not use this method on fabric curtains or honeycomb blinds. These materials are very sensitive to moisture, and using water can ruin them completely. In these cases, settle for thorough vacuuming, and if necessary use very delicate spot cleaning for specific stains.

If the blinds in the kitchen or bathroom have accumulated a layer of grease that does not come off with a light wipe, you can always take them down gently, soak them in the bathtub with a little dish soap and scrub with a soft brush (just be careful not to wet the upper mechanism). Rinse well, dry in the sun – and put them back in place.
