Lautaro Inspires Inter Comeback in 2:2 Thriller Against Roma

The Italian media was sent into a frenzy following Saturday's thrilling 2:2 draw between Roma and Inter Milan. The Nerazzurri found themselves trailing 2:0 in the high-stakes clash, but mounted a stunning second-half comeback thanks to a brace from Lautaro Martinez, securing a valuable point that keeps them at the summit of Serie A alongside Roma, with both teams now holding 13 points out of a possible 15.

It was yet another match where Inter exhibited two completely contrasting faces. In the first half, Christian Chivu's side struggled to cope with the hosts' tempo and intensity, conceding twice and looking a far cry from the form they displayed at the start of the season. However, after the interval, the Nerazzurri shifted gears, seized control of the game, and once again showcased their resilience. Roma dominated the opening period, surging ahead courtesy of a brace from Manu Kone. Inter struggled to create clear-cut openings and failed to deliver quality service to Lautaro Martinez, who was left largely isolated.

The Turning Point and Lautaro's Heroics

Whatever Christian Chivu said to his players during the halftime break clearly worked, though the manager hinted that the dressing room discussion was particularly sharp. "I'll start with the second half, because what I told the players about the first half in the locker room stays between us," Chivu said after the match. "I am convinced they know exactly what I think." The transformation was immediate. Inter returned to the pitch with a completely different attitude, increasing the tempo and pinning Roma back.

Then came the man who has already become the symbol of their comebacks—Lautaro. The Argentine scored Inter's first goal in the 46th minute and later completed his brace in the 79th minute to level the score at 2:2. Lautaro has now netted five goals in his last five matches against Roma, underlining his decisive impact in big games. Four of Inter's 13 league points this season have come directly from goals scored by their captain.

"Lautaro saved us once again," teammate Marcus Thuram summarized in a sentence that perhaps best captures the immense importance of the Argentine captain.

Roma coach Gianpiero Gasperini also acknowledged the immense challenge of containing him. "He is a champion whom everyone respects, despite the headache he causes his opponents. He always scores against teams I coach; I told him to stop doing that," he joked with a smile.

Defensive Concerns and Looking Ahead

From Chivu's perspective, while the comeback provided plenty of satisfaction, he could not hide his concern over his side's sluggish starts. "We must improve our initial approach and understand the opponent's intensity," he said. "I am not demanding that we out-intensity them, but at least we must match it." The Romanian manager admitted that Inter is suffering from a recurring issue: the team struggles to get into games initially but manages to recover after the break.

Against Roma, they conceded two goals for the fourth consecutive match across all competitions, having shipped seven goals in their last three league outings. "We need to do a better job without the ball," Chivu noted. Despite the criticism, Chivu preferred to focus on the positives. "The second half in terms of attitude, determination, and character was exceptional. We played against a great opponent, and we know what Roma represents. It was an entertaining match."

Gasperini could also take plenty of positives despite surrendering a two-goal lead. "I think we played on equal terms, and both teams could have won at different points in the game," he stated. "This match should give us confidence for the future. We didn't stop for a moment against a strong opponent, both technically and physically. We need to focus on ourselves and realize that in certain situations we can be a very good team."
