Elad Braun has been appointed as the coach of Ironi Rishon LeZion with one goal: to return the team to the Premier League after 24 years. He discusses his tenure at Maccabi Herzliya, his ambitions for the upcoming season, and the fierce competition in the National League.
Elad Braun finished his final game as coach of Maccabi Herzliya on the verge of tears. For a whole year, he led his team in the upper echelon of the table, contending for promotion, only to see Hapoel Ramat Gan celebrate the Premier League ticket instead.
"I think we had an exciting season, one we didn't even dream of. The secret to our success was the people. We had a committed team, a healthy locker room, and players who believed in our path," he recalls.
This summer, Braun signed with Ironi Rishon LeZion, knowing the club's goal after many years in the National League is to finally reach the Premier League. "We focused on building a team that is hungry, committed, and plays attacking, intense football. I am satisfied with our progress, but we are still looking to strengthen in several positions," the coach notes.
45-year-old Braun successfully coached Maccabi Herzliya for five years, bringing them back from Liga Alef and leading them to the National League's upper playoffs. He replaces David Martan, who finished eighth with Rishon LeZion last season.
"Rishon LeZion is a club with tradition, fans, and the potential to be in the Premier League," Braun declares. "We aren't afraid to set high goals. The aspiration is clear, but it must be proven in every training session and every match. If we are consistent and work correctly, we will compete for that promotion ticket."
Having previously coached Hapoel Petah Tikva in the Premier League, Braun aims to return through the front door. "I am proud of what we did in Herzliya. Unfortunately, we didn't manage to complete the mission, which was painful. Now, I am fully focused on Ironi Rishon LeZion and my goal is to lead this club to success."
The last time the "orange" team played in the Premier League was the 2002-2003 season. Since then, they have struggled to return to the top stage. "Rishon LeZion has all the attributes to be a leading club. It is a big city with huge potential. When the team is competitive and connects with the community, the fans will return in droves," Braun says.
He acknowledges the challenge ahead. With teams like the relegated MS Ashdod, Bnei Yehuda, Kiryat Gat, and Hapoel Kfar Saba all aiming for promotion, the National League remains highly competitive.
"I think this will be one of the most difficult and balanced seasons in recent years. There are no easy games in this league, and whoever maintains stability throughout the season will be the one at the top," Braun concluded.
