Nicolas Winding Refn's masterpiece 'Drive' in 2011 cemented the Danish director's status as a visionary. Ten years later, following a life-saving heart surgery, he returned with 'Her Private Hell' (The Neon Demon's spiritual successor). Sadly, the film has been met with brutal critical reviews upon its release.

A Personal Yet Flawed Vision

Co-written from a deeply personal place following his health scare, the movie explores the complex bond between a father and daughter within a dystopian, foggy Tokyo. Sophie Thatcher stars as Elle, an actress attempting to reconnect with her estranged father, while Charles Melton plays an American soldier searching for his missing daughter. Despite the intriguing premise, the script suffers from weak dialogue and poorly developed characters.

'Her Private Hell is a total artistic failure that plunges straight into the abyss of boredom.'

Style Over Substance

While the film retains Winding Refn's signature neon-soaked aesthetics and striking visual framing, it heavily overindulges in darkness and sluggish pacing. The atmospheric tension unfortunately collapses under pretentious style, leaving audiences longing for the cinematic brilliance of his earlier work.
