Crazy world record in Paris: Liebmann stunned in 1,500m freestyle
The 19-year-old German swimmer clocked 14:26.79 minutes and improved Bobby Finke's record by almost four seconds. This is the second world record broken at the European Swimming Championships.
The world record in the men's 1,500m freestyle was broken this evening, Saturday, by the German Johannes Liebmann at the European Swimming Championships held in Paris. The 19-year-old stopped the clock at 14:26.79 minutes in the longest race in the pool, improving the previous record by almost four seconds. The previous record (14:30.67 minutes) had belonged to the American Bobby Finke since the 2024 Olympics, where he won the gold medal. Liebmann finished more than 60 meters and almost 13 seconds ahead of the Hungarian Zalan Sarkany (14:39.45 minutes), who finished in second place. Oliver Klemet finished third (14:40.64 minutes). Earlier this week, Liebmann also won the gold medal in the 800m freestyle, setting a new European record of 7:37.59 minutes. This was a record that had belonged to Liebmann himself. This is the second world record broken at the European Championships, which will conclude tomorrow. The Italian Sara Curtis broke the world record in the 50m backstroke twice in two days.
