Many of us hypocritically prefer sending voice messages on WhatsApp to save typing time, yet lose patience when others send long, rambling voice notes. AI expert Tomer Cohen has developed an ingenious solution called Ramble, a tool that automatically transcribes voice messages directly within the chat interface.

Solving the Voice Note Dilemma

Tomer Cohen, a 40-year-old tech veteran with two decades of experience in AI product development, faced the classic dilemma of loving to send voice notes while hating to listen to them. "It's a somewhat absurd medium. It's wonderful for the sender, but often annoying for the receiver who has to stop everything and listen for two minutes," Cohen explains. His goal was simple: automated transcription for every incoming and outgoing voice message without requiring extra clicks.

Ramble displays transcripts within seconds right beneath the audio recording in the chat window. The system automatically condenses awkward pauses and stutters while correcting textual errors, leaving the original audio file available if users still wish to listen.

Rapid Development and Security

Cohen built Ramble utilizing Claude Code and Codex, completing the initial version in just a single evening. Connecting to the service resembles linking WhatsApp Web via a QR code or phone number. Privacy remains a core priority, as recordings are processed strictly for real-time transcription without being permanently stored on servers. Additionally, the code is open-source on GitHub, enabling users to audit the software or deploy a personal instance.

Originally designed for personal use, Ramble gained unexpected traction after Cohen shared the tool on LinkedIn. Current limitations cap users at 30 minutes of free transcription per day to manage server costs, though future monetization models remain under consideration if usage scales significantly.

The Future of AI Integration on Messaging Platforms

Connecting external tools like Ramble currently mimics WhatsApp Web device linking because Meta officially restricts third-party integrations. However, Cohen believes this resistance will inevitably crumble. "Life for many of us happens on WhatsApp, and keeping AI assistants and similar services out will become increasingly difficult," he concludes.
