Rahat Resident Indicted for M16 Shooting Near Family and School
A Rahat resident has been indicted for firing an M16 rifle near family members and children following a violent dispute. Despite surveillance evidence, the suspect denied the charges as prosecutors requested his detention.

A young resident of Rahat, Ahmad Abu Gara, has been formally indicted following an incident in which he allegedly opened fire with an M16 rifle in a residential area near several people, including children and family members. According to the indictment filed by the Southern District Prosecutor's Office, the confrontation began as a verbal dispute in a school parking lot near his home, which escalated into a physical brawl. After family members intervened, Abu Gara became involved in another altercation with a relative who allegedly threatened him with a stick.
Investigators stated that Abu Gara ran into his house, emerged moments later with a long-barreled M16 rifle, and pointed it at his family members, including his father, grandmother, and several children. Despite attempts by two relatives to disarm him, he managed to retain the weapon, moved toward a nearby school while firing shots into the air, and continued shooting in the area. Surveillance footage clearly captured him conducting the armed rampage near his residence.
During police questioning, Abu Gara denied all charges, claiming he could not remember the events or seeing his family members, and asserted he had never touched a firearm. When confronted with security camera footage, he dismissed the evidence, stating that anyone claiming it was him was lying. The evidentiary file includes testimonies from multiple family members, including his father, who immediately identified him as the gunman.
In the motion for detention until the end of proceedings, prosecutor Idan Ivgi emphasized the extreme danger posed by armed offenders amid a nationwide surge in gun violence. The prosecution warned of a high risk of escalating violence against family members and neighbors, noting that it was only by sheer miracle that no one was killed or injured during the incident.
