Netanya Insurance Agent Sentenced to 12 Months in Prison for VAT Evasion
Netanya Magistrate's Court sentenced insurance agent Daniel Meir to 12 months in prison and a 12,000 NIS fine for omitting over 1.14 million NIS in transactions from VAT reports.
Netanya Magistrate's Court sentenced Daniel Meir, an insurance agent and manager of Daniel Meir Life Insurance Agency Ltd., to 12 months in prison and a fine of 12,000 NIS. Meir was convicted of omitting transactions exceeding 1 million NIS from his VAT reports to evade tax.
According to the amended indictment, to which Meir and the company confessed as part of a plea bargain, between 2018 and 2020 they executed transactions totaling approximately 1.52 million NIS. Out of this amount, they omitted transactions totaling about 1.14 million NIS from their VAT reports, with the associated tax amounting to 166,127 NIS. The default was only partially resolved, with 40,676 NIS recovered through Tax Authority payments and collection actions, leaving the remaining debt outstanding.
The court accepted the Tax Authority's position under the plea bargain and sentenced the defendant to the upper limit requested by the Tax Authority: 12 months actual imprisonment. The sentencing noted that Meir had previously been convicted of a similar offense and committed the current offenses while previous criminal proceedings were pending against him. Judge Guy Avnon emphasized that past proceedings did not deter him from repeatedly committing tax offenses.
