Nauru's Vice President Lionel Aingimea inaugurated his country's embassy in Jerusalem, becoming the tenth foreign mission in Israel's capital, while seeking technological and economic cooperation.

Nauru’s Vice President and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Lionel Aingimea, arrived in Israel for the official opening of his country's embassy in Иерусалим (Jerusalem), becoming the tenth foreign embassy operating in Israel's capital. In an interview, Aingimea emphasized the deep spiritual and moral connection between the island nation and Israel, noting that Nauru consistently stands by Israel in international forums.
"Israel is in the heart of the people of Nauru, both for religious and moral reasons, and also because it is like us, a sort of island state in the Middle East," Aingimea stated.
Diplomatic Support and Economic Aspirations
Nauru ranks third globally in voting alongside Israel at the United Nations, trailing only the United States and Micronesia. During the embassy inauguration ceremony, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar praised Nauru as one of Israel's most loyal and steadfast allies in the international community, highlighting its backing during legal challenges at the International Court of Justice.
Beyond diplomacy, Aingimea's visit focuses on fostering economic, commercial, and technological ties. The small Pacific island nation, spanning just 21 square kilometers with a population of around 30,000, seeks Israeli expertise in water desalination, modern agriculture, and innovative fisheries management to address its unique environmental and developmental challenges.
Regional Repercussions and Future Cooperation
The decision to establish the embassy in Иерусалим followed discussions between Aingimea and Sa'ar in Fiji. Aingimea noted that his country’s motto is "God first" and expressed a strong belief that supporting Israel brings divine blessings. Meanwhile, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) issued a statement condemning Nauru's move to open its embassy in Jerusalem, warning of potential diplomatic repercussions.
