One of the most heated fixtures in English football returns tomorrow as Millwall hosts West Ham for their first derby clash in 14 years. Manor Solomon is expected to start for the Hammers, but ahead of the opening whistle, all eyes in London are fixed on the unprecedented security arrangements surrounding the match.
Unprecedented Security Measures
London's Metropolitan Police are deploying heavily reinforced forces out of concern for potential clashes between the rival fanbases. No fewer than 400 police officers are set to patrol the streets of East London, roughly four times the usual staffing for a Championship fixture. Some officers will be equipped with riot control gear, though without shields.
In addition, police have been granted the authority to enforce a special dispersal order, allowing officers to remove anyone deemed involved in public disorder from the area. The designated zone covers a vast expanse of London surrounding The Den stadium, stretching from Tower Bridge in the west to just past Greenwich Park in the east.
"On Saturday, 19 September at 12:30, Millwall will face West Ham at The Den – the first time the two clubs have met since 2012. We want fans to enjoy the game safely and have worked with both clubs to help make that happen," police stated.
A Fierce Historical Rivalry
This extraordinary preparation stems from the long and violent history between the two clubs. A League Cup match in 2009 saw severe fan clashes, during which one person was stabbed. Their last meeting took place in February 2012 in the Championship, where West Ham secured a 2:1 victory in a volatile encounter featuring pitch invasions.
To minimize any pre-match contact between opposing supporters, West Ham fans have been instructed to arrive at The Den via a single designated station. The club clarified that away supporters arriving at other local stations will be redirected to the designated hub, which provides a direct walkway to the away stand.
Sporting Stakes
From a sporting perspective, Solomon and his teammates head into the derby sitting at the top of the Championship table on goal difference. Millwall, which fought near the summit last season, has had a less stable start and currently ranks 11th. For the Israeli player, expected to retain his spot in the starting lineup, this marks his first opportunity to experience one of London football's toughest and most volatile rivalries firsthand.
