Miguel Vitor Anchors Hapoel Beersheba Defense in Win Over Maccabi Haifa
Miguel Vitor has transformed into Hapoel Beersheba's defensive anchor after nearly leaving last year, leading his team to a crucial win over Maccabi Haifa.
Miguel Vitor has emerged as the defensive linchpin for Hapoel Beersheba this season, despite nearly leaving the club and returning to Portugal with his family in the middle of last year due to a lack of playing time. His stellar performances in the summer, alongside Itay Rotman, were instrumental in steering Beersheba past Red Star Belgrade into the Europa League group stage.
Following a crucial victory against Maccabi Haifa, Hapoel Beersheba manager Ran Kozuch praised the veteran defender in a post-match press conference. Kozuch noted that he urged Vitor to stay during contract talks over the summer because of his unmatched value on the pitch and his exceptional leadership in the locker room.
Reflecting on the match, Vitor admitted that the first half against Maccabi Haifa was challenging, but early goals in the second half shifted the momentum. When asked about his long-term future and a potential retirement at the club, the defender smiled and emphasized his deep connection to Israel after a decade with Hapoel Beersheba.
Addressing the criticism faced by his defensive partner Djibril Diop, Vitor offered full support, noting that a single game can completely change the atmosphere around a player and boost his confidence moving forward.
