After winning the German Cup last season for the first time since 2019/20, Bayern Munich began their title defense this Wednesday with a 4-1 away victory at Osnabrück in the final match of the tournament's first round. The second-round draw is scheduled for September 5.
The hosts stunned the visitors by taking a 1-0 lead in the fifth minute through Robin Meissner, but Bayern responded quickly. Harry Kane leveled the score in the 18th minute, and Tom Bischof completed the turnaround in the 24th minute. Michael Olise added a third in the 73rd minute, and Kane completed his brace with a successful penalty in the 86th minute. The match ended 4-1. Joel Abu Hanna did not feature for the losing side.
Despite their league dominance, Bayern Munich has not won the Cup in consecutive seasons since 2005 and 2006. Perhaps this year they will achieve the double again.
In the 1978/79 season, Osnabrück famously stunned Bayern Munich with a 4-5 victory in the second round of the Cup, a match where even a Gerd Müller hat-trick could not prevent the upset. Since then, the teams have met twice more, with Bayern winning both encounters. Tonight, the team from northwest Germany was unable to replicate the surprise from 48 years ago.
