Great: First European final for Yonatan Kapitolnik
The Israeli high jumper cleared 2.23 m on his first attempt and qualified in third place at the championship taking place in Birmingham. Lamziel and Shai ended their run in the qualifiers.
Despite a long period spent recovering from an injury, Israeli high jumper Yonatan Kapitolnik proved his class by qualifying for the European Championship final in Birmingham, finishing the preliminary stage in third place.
Only four jumpers cleared the 2.23 m height on their first attempt, including Kapitolnik. The great former Olympic champion from Tokyo 2020, Italian Gianmarco Tamberi, only joined them after his third attempt. Kapitolnik initially failed his first jump at 2.19 m, but recovered on the second attempt. The 23-year-old then cleared 2.23 m on his first try to secure his spot in the final. This adds another significant achievement to his career, following his titles as European junior champion and world junior champion, as well as his appearance in the 2021 World Championship final in Oregon.
Meanwhile, Sagi Lamziel, the national record holder in the 110 m hurdles (13.77 s), finished with a time of 14.50 s, while Omri Shai, Israel's record holder in the 400 m hurdles (49.82 s), set a personal best of 50.30 s.
