Maccabi Tel Aviv Faces Early EuroLeague Struggles After High-Profile Summer
Maccabi Tel Aviv faces early-season scrutiny after a disappointing EuroLeague start despite a significant budget increase and high-profile summer signings.

Maccabi Tel Aviv opened the new EuroLeague season with high expectations following a busy summer that saw the club increase its budget and sign notable players such as Yam Madar, Daniel Theis, and Bonzie Colson. However, the first three games painted a worrying picture. The "Double Dribble" podcast analyzed the gap between expectations and current performance, featuring former Maccabi head coach Guy Goodes.
Shifting Standards at Maccabi
Goodes highlighted the fundamental shift in expectations since his tenure at the club, stating: "When I coached Maccabi, anything short of the Final Four was considered a failure."
Analyst Dror Hoffman added that the high expectations were entirely justified given the club's offseason moves and offensive averages from the previous year.
Maccabi Tel Aviv simply failed to meet its own expectations. The roster additions and budget increases made these lofty goals both real and correct.
Roster Concerns and Big Men
Discussing the team's composition, Goodes noted the strategy of retaining core players while adding high-profile talent, but raised questions about the frontcourt. "The question regarding the big men remains: is Daniel Theis good enough? Not for the domestic league, let's not get confused," Goodes remarked, while also questioning the depth at the center position.
Hoffman concluded the discussion with a stark assessment of the team's immediate standing while maintaining long-term optimism: "Maccabi is simply the worst team in the EuroLeague right now, period. Still, Maccabi will get better; that is clear to everyone."
