Tears flowed in abundance at the Monumental Stadium as Argentina bade an emotional farewell to Lionel Messi, who made his final appearance for the national team in a 3-0 friendly victory over Benin. Before 80,000 adoring fans, the 39-year-og legend capped off his international career with his 126th goal and two assists, bringing a glorious chapter in Albiceleste history to a close.

An Emotional Farewell in Buenos Aires

Messi struggled to hold back tears even on his way to the stadium as he witnessed the massive crowds streaming toward the Monumental. Inside, a specially decorated locker room awaited him, while his wife Antonela and their three children watched from the stands. During the national anthem, the veteran maestro stood alongside his children, once again overcome with emotion. Coach Lionel Scaloni also wept, sharing in the poignant moment.

"This has been an immense pride for me to represent the national team and wear this shirt for more than 20 years," Messi said in his final speech. "Even in the hardest moments, I never stopped fighting. I swear I don't want this to end, but now I will be on the other side, cheering for the guys. Always united."

A Sparkling Performance on the Pitch

On the field, Messi was involved in nearly every significant moment. After a scoreless first half where Benin held firm, Argentina broke through right after the break. In the 48th minute, Messi delivered a perfect corner to Nicolas Otamendi, who scored with a spectacular volley for his 69th international assist. Minutes later, he provided his 70th assist to Nico Paz.

In the 74th minute, Messi completed the party himself, converting from the penalty spot after Agustin Giay was brought down in the box. Argentina secured the 3-0 win, extending their home unbeaten run to 11 matches, while Messi concluded a legendary career spanning six World Cups and multiple Copa America tournaments.
