Likud Weighs Strategy on Ofer Winter Ahead of Knesset Elections
Likud leadership is weighing its electoral strategy regarding Ofer Winter's lagging party as internal polls show him struggling below the threshold, risking right-wing votes.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Likud leadership are weighing a crucial strategic dilemma regarding the party of Ofer Winter ahead of the upcoming elections. Internal polls show Winter polling at just 1.8% to 1.9%, falling short of the electoral threshold and raising concerns among Likud officials over potential wasted right-wing votes.
Strategic Dilemma Over Winter's Party
Likud faces two contrasting approaches. The first option is to launch an aggressive campaign against Winter to absorb his supporters and prevent the loss of tens of thousands of ballots. The second approach is to lower the political flames, hoping that Winter's faction will eventually cross the threshold and secure additional seats for the right-wing bloc.
This debate stems from Likud's previous vision of fostering a satellite party capable of capturing right-wing voters who hesitate to back Netanyahu directly, yet refuse to support Bezalel Smotrich, Itamar Ben-Gvir, or the ultra-Orthodox parties. However, concerns regarding Winter's post-election loyalty have intensified, particularly in the event of a tight parliamentary deadlock.
"We still have to deal with Winter," Benjamin Netanyahu warned during a recent Likud faction meeting, cautioning against right-wing splinter factions that might shift allegiance.
Upcoming Campaign Milestones
Aside from the tactical assessments regarding Winter, Likud is preparing for major events to jumpstart its national campaign. On Thursday, the party will host a festive toast and official campaign launch event at Expo Tel Aviv, featuring massive screens and thousands of activists.
Additionally, Prime Minister Netanyahu is scheduled to deliver a high-profile address at the United Nations General Assembly in New York on September 24, with party insiders hinting at significant political messaging tailored for the campaign trail.
