LG Responds to Allegations That Its Smart TVs Eavesdrop on Users
LG has responded to a security investigation alleging that its smart TVs record audio during standby mode and transmit local network data for advertising purposes.
In recent years, television screens have become significantly smarter, featuring network connectivity, app stores, advanced remote controls, integrations, and even built-in microphones and cameras. However, these advanced capabilities bring notable security risks. A recent investigation revealed that LG smart TVs allegedly listen to users even when powered off, prompting an official response from the manufacturer.
The Investigation Findings
An investigation published by Gamers Nexus, in collaboration with Level1Techs and independent security researchers, tested several LG models, including the flagship G5 television. According to the findings, LG screens scan the local wireless network, search for connected devices, and transmit data to the LG Ad Solutions service for targeted advertising.
Furthermore, the tests indicated that the built-in microphones could capture audio even while the TVs were in standby mode or disconnected from the network, with audio files transmitted once reconnected. The report also highlighted the use of Automatic Content Recognition (ACR) technology, which previously triggered legal challenges.
LG Responds to Allegations
Following the controversy, LG issued an official statement addressing the spying and eavesdropping allegations, describing them as "misconceptions" regarding television operations. The company stated that it does not continuously record or document user conversations, and that speech-to-text processing is only activated when a user utters a wake word or presses the microphone button on the remote control.
"Speech processing and data transmission only occur after explicit activation via wake word or remote control interaction," LG stated.
Despite the clarification, Gamers Nexus maintained that the screens store data during standby mode and alleged that the company utilizes dark patterns to induce users into accepting comprehensive tracking terms.
