Israel Hayom Bestsellers: Grossman enters straight at number one
"Celebrating Life" is emerging as the surprise hit of the summer. "Conversations with God," first published in Israel in 1997, enters the chart, partly due to momentum on social media. Amos Harel and Asaf Inbari are still with us. Flight books stand out in the second five. Everything that happened this week in the bestsellers.
It is not every day that David Grossman releases a new novel, and his entry straight to the number one spot on the chart proves that the Israeli public has been waiting for this news for a long time.
Grossman, one of the last of the Israeli literary canon and perhaps the most prominent among them, has written a family novel centered on Yaron Ashkenazi, who watches his complex family as if from the outside.
When he was 15, his father was arrested and put on a lengthy trial, which the son and mother watched from the outside, and during which they had to deal with their lives falling apart before their eyes. Today, in his 30s, Yaron learns things about his father that perhaps change the way he has seen him all these years.
Here, too, one can find Grossman's complex, well-rounded, contradiction-filled characters, but also those full of compassion, love, and humanity. And perhaps just before the Tishrei holidays, this is exactly the book, and exactly the writer, that we needed.
