Lebanon Vows Thorough Investigation After Major Explosives Seizure
A major explosives seizure in Lebanon sparks a political crisis as Prime Minister Najib Mikati vows a thorough investigation into suspected Hezbollah links.
A massive explosives smuggling attempt intercepted at a checkpoint in Lebanon has ignited a major political and security crisis. Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati vowed that authorities will thoroughly investigate the incident and hold all perpetrators accountable.
The Interception and Investigation
Security forces stopped a commercial vehicle loaded with hundreds of kilograms of C4 explosives, metal balls, and shrapnel intended for explosive devices. Two suspects were arrested, with local media outlets reporting conflicting claims regarding potential links to Hezbollah and whether the shipment was bound for the southern suburbs of Beirut.
The government will not tolerate any attempt to undermine Lebanon's security and will act firmly against all involved, Prime Minister Mikati stated.
Political Repercussions
Anti-Hezbollah parliamentarians are demanding a transparent investigation into the chain of command, warning against any government cover-up. Meanwhile, international actors have reportedly warned Beirut against yielding to pressures regarding the confiscated materials.
