Israeli Olympic swimmer Lea Polonsky set a new national record in the short-course 200-meter butterfly during the US World Championship Trials in Westmont, Illinois, clocking a time of 2:09.33 minutes.

Polonsky, 24, shaved 0.36 seconds off the previous Israeli record held by Keren Zivner since 2015. Her impressive performance secured her the fifth-fastest time in the preliminary heats.

Because foreign competitors are restricted to the preliminary rounds at the US trials, Polonsky will not advance to the finals despite her strong result. The meet serves as a key preparatory event ahead of the World Short Course Championships in Beijing this December.

Polonsky is scheduled to compete in the 200-meter freestyle and 100-meter butterfly preliminaries in the coming days as part of her ongoing training program.
