Former footballer and British presenter Gary Lineker sparked controversy after sharing a video on social media on Sunday, in which anti-Zionist activist Tony Greenstein compares Zionism to Nazism. The video was originally posted by the organization CAGE International and documents Greenstein speaking outside Kingston Crown Court in London. This follows his acquittal last week on charges of soliciting support for Hamas.
"A jury of 12 men and women determined that I am not a terrorist, and that resistance to genocide in Gaza is not terrorism," said Greenstein.
He then compared Zionism to Nazism, stating: "I stood there as a Jewish person and made it clear to the jury that my opposition to Zionism stems from the fact that I am Jewish, and that Zionism is in the tradition of the Nazis who persecuted Jews."
Greenstein, a 72-year-old Jewish anti-Zionist activist whose father was an Orthodox rabbi, testified during his trial that he believed the October 7 attack was "justified." He also stated that he supports Hamas as part of the "resistance," but not the organization itself.
This is not the first time Lineker has faced criticism over posts concerning Israel. In 2025, he left the BBC after sharing an anti-Zionist video on Instagram that featured an illustration of a rat, an image used in antisemitic propaganda in Nazi Germany. Lineker deleted the post at the time, apologized, and claimed he had not noticed the illustration and its meaning.
