Pep Guardiola's decade at Manchester City will be remembered for 20 titles, football that changed England, and an extraordinary dynasty. But the new Amazon Prime series - "A Beautiful Obsession" - reveals that the end was much less glamorous: an exhausted, nervous, and sometimes helpless coach who confronted his players, threatened to leave, and brought his personal life into the locker room.
One of the sharpest moments came in a confrontation with captain Kyle Walker. After the loss to Liverpool in December 2024, Guardiola came to him with complaints again, and the defender snapped back: "You say my name in every meeting. In every fucking meeting, in every fucking thing." Walker felt that the coach was singling him out again and again as the culprit, and the confrontation illustrated how much the relationship between them had already eroded.
Two weeks later, in the Manchester derby, Guardiola warned Walker at halftime about long balls behind the defense. Exactly such a move led to Amad Diallo's winning goal. Walker played only three more games before his path at the club ended abruptly.
The series also shows Guardiola in moments where he struggled to understand how a team accustomed to dominating every opponent suddenly became fragile. After one of the losses, he turned to his players with a broken voice: "If I am the problem, you need to tell me." Later, he tried to shake them up: "Make me feel that you are here. This is a fucking good team, this is a fucking good club. Now we need to do more because we are in a mess."
In another case, after the 2:0 loss to Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League in November 2025, Guardiola had completely lost his patience. After making ten changes to the lineup and the move failed, he accused his players of a lack of courage, passion, and love for the game. "I work for you. I leave my life, my divorce, my family is far away, everything for you. And what do you give back?" he lashed out at them.
This scene was particularly unusual because Guardiola brought the personal crisis he was going through at the time into the locker room. In another instance, he even spoke in front of the players about the fact that he still loves his ex-wife, but that the passion between them had disappeared. The series shows how much the line between his personal life and work became increasingly blurred.
The decision to part ways with Kevin De Bruyne also hurt him. "It kills me," Guardiola said about the decision not to renew the Belgian's contract. City CEO Ferran Soriano said that De Bruyne understood the message but was sad and did not want to leave.
Behind the scenes, the management also realized that the system had worn out. Club chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak said that Guardiola had threatened to leave countless times over the years, until the last time it felt different. According to him, for years Pep was "the boy who cried wolf," but eventually the moment came when "this time there really was a wolf."
City's crisis in the 2024/25 season was a breaking point. The team lost nine out of 12 games in one period, a streak that was unfamiliar to Guardiola throughout his career. "Losing five, six, seven in a row - that doesn't happen to me," he admitted. "I told the club: maybe it's over."
Although he stayed for a while longer, in retrospect it turns out that thoughts about ending the journey were already there. In an explanation he gave later to the players, he said: "I had energy that I will not have anymore."
Now, after leaving Manchester City after ten years, Guardiola is not at all sure he will return to coaching. "I don't even know myself what I will do," he said. "It will be hard to return - that is my feeling today. I need to refresh many things that happened in my personal life. I need to find myself a bit in other things. I need to sit and disconnect for a while."
In the summer, an attempt was already made by the Italian national team to get him back to work immediately, but he rejected it and clarified that he was too tired to take on a new challenge.
Someone who knows him well, Txiki Begiristain, thinks the best thing for him right now is simply to step away. "He needs to rest and he needs to see that there is life after football," said his close friend. "If he only knows football and football people, he will remain on the same roller coaster he has lived on."
And so, precisely after a decade in which Guardiola almost always seemed in full control, the new series presents a completely different picture: a coach who gradually wore out, snapped more, doubted himself, and finally reached a point where he was no longer sure he had the strength for another round.
