"The knee was shattered": Star player to miss a year after horrific tackle in friendly match

The friendly match between Monaco and Getafe on Thursday ended in a 1-0 victory for the hosts, but the evening at Stade Louis II will be remembered for a shocking tackle by Christian Mawissa, who brutally struck the knee of Chrisantus Uche. The Nigerian international returned to Getafe after a stint at Crystal Palace and was expected to lead the Spanish side this season, but the incident in the 78th minute has derailed those plans.

Mawissa struck Uche's right knee wildly with his left leg, initially appearing confused by the referee's whistle. Reports in Spain described the injury as the knee being "shattered," and on Friday, Getafe confirmed the severity of the damage. The 23-year-old Uche suffers from multiple ligament tears and a broken kneecap, requiring surgery that will sideline him for the entire 2026/27 season and beyond.

"He will be out of action for at least 12 months," the club announced.

Mawissa was shown a red card. While initial reports in France suggested Monaco might bench the player until Uche returns, no official statement was made. Under the guidance of his coach Filipe Luis, the defender apologized for the challenge:

"I had no intention of hurting him, and I am sorry from the bottom of my heart. It was a wrong tackle on my part, and I apologize for the injury I caused."

Uche arrived from Nigeria at 18, starting his path with the Moralo reserve team. He later moved to Ceuta in the third division before signing a four-year deal with Getafe in 2024. Although a midfielder, he was frequently deployed as a striker, scoring goals and becoming a key player. Last summer, he was loaned to Crystal Palace with a 20-million-euro purchase obligation, but the deal was canceled after he recorded two goals in 22 appearances, leading to his return to Getafe.
