Mohamed Salah has only just arrived at Trabzonspor and has already received a particularly unusual gift: the mayor of Trabzon gave the Egyptian star a plot of land in the city during a meeting that left the new signing quite surprised.
Salah, 34, who left Liverpool and joined Trabzonspor on a free transfer, was welcomed yesterday, Thursday, by about 25,000 fans in a big celebration that included flares and a show of support. This morning he met with Mayor Hüseyin Avni Coşkun Çebi as part of a promotional shoot, but the conversation quickly took a surprising turn.
"Global warming is threatening the world," the mayor told Salah. "In the future, it will be difficult to live in Egypt during the summer. Our region will be very livable in those years, and will be among the places least affected by global warming."
After these words came the big surprise: the mayor announced to Salah that he was giving him a "beautiful plot of land" in the city. According to him, it is a "wonderful place for your children and grandchildren, with no water problems and not affected by global warming."
Trabzon's mayor offered Salah a suggestion: "Let's give you a beautiful piece of land, and that way we'll have provided you and your kids and grandkids a beautiful spot in the future that won't be affected by global warming." Mohamed Salah thanked him.
Salah looked surprised by the gesture, which of course came in addition to the handsome financial terms he received at his new team: according to reports, he will earn 17 million euros per season — an all-time record in Turkish football — before bonuses and percentages he will be entitled to from merchandise sales.
