Barzani explicitly blamed Iran for the attack, defining it as a "dangerous escalation and a direct threat to the region's security and stability."
According to the statement from the Kurdish counter-terrorism unit, the attack occurred around 00:28. Two explosive-laden drones of the "Hadid 110" model were launched from across the Iranian border. The targets included Barzani's private office and the home of the head of the Parastin agency, the region's intelligence and security body. No casualties were reported, and authorities are currently assessing the extent of the damage.
"My personal office and the home of the head of the security and intelligence agency were attacked earlier today by Iranian drone strikes," Barzani wrote on the X network after receiving the preliminary investigation findings.
He added that he "strongly condemns these reckless and unacceptable attacks," emphasizing that they "will not cause us to stop performing our duties and protecting our citizens."
The attack follows months of drone and missile strikes against the Kurdish region amid broader regional tensions. Just last week, Barzani stated in an interview with Al Jazeera that the region had suffered more than a thousand such attacks since the beginning of the conflict. The Kurdish Prime Minister reiterated that Erbil has no interest in being a party to the war and that Kurdish territory is not used to harm Iran, dismissing Tehran's accusations as a mere pretext for aggression.
The event joins a series of aerial incidents recorded in Erbil in recent days. On Friday morning, coalition forces intercepted three explosive drones in the city's skies. Regional authorities have been warning for months about repeated airspace incursions and are calling for strengthened defense capabilities, noting that targeting assets directly linked to the Prime Minister and the intelligence leadership marks a significant escalation in the threat level.
