Decades-Old Lake Mead Barrel Murder Victim Identified by Police
Authorities have identified human remains found in a barrel at Lake Mead as Edward Jackson from Arkansas, who was murdered in the 1980s. The historic cold case remains unsolved.
Decades-Old Mystery Solved in Nevada
Decades after a grisly discovery in Nevada, authorities have finally identified the human remains found stuffed inside a rusted barrel at Lake Mead as Edward Jackson from Arkansas. Jackson was shot in the head and killed in the early 1980s, an era when the sprawling reservoir's water levels were significantly higher than they are today. Boaters stumbled upon the barrel in May 2022 after severe drought and water overuse drastically lowered the lake's water level, exposing long-hidden secrets.
Investigators utilized advanced forensic genealogy, bone DNA samples, facial reconstructions, and clothing descriptions to identify the victim. Despite determining his identity, the homicide remains unsolved. Police noted that while the method of disposal bears the hallmark of historic Las Vegas mob executions, no direct evidence currently links the killing to organized crime.
"The case will never be closed until we solve it," stated Robert Price of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department homicide section.
Historic Ties and Environmental Shifts
Jackson was reportedly in his mid-fifties at the time of his death and had a brief criminal record in Utah during the early 1980s. Relatives reported that he loved to travel and was last seen in Arkansas during the early 1980s, though they never filed a missing person report. Historians point out that when the body was dumped, the perpetrators likely assumed it would remain submerged forever in the deep waters of the massive reservoir.
