New York Knicks and Karl-Anthony Towns are continuing contract extension talks, but significant gaps remain between the parties. According to Shams Charania of ESPN, the Knicks have offered their star a new four-year contract worth about 200 million dollars and have not increased the offer so far.

My sources indicate that the Knicks are offering Towns a four-year contract extension worth approximately 200 million dollars, Charania said. That is 76 million dollars less than his maximum contract value.

According to the report, Towns has shown willingness to compromise to help the Knicks stay below the second apron tax threshold, but New York has not budged from its current framework.

Towns has shown a willingness to negotiate a deal that would allow the team to stay below the second apron, but the Knicks have not moved from the four-year, roughly 200 million dollar figure, Charania added.

The issue becomes especially sensitive following New York championship-caliber season, as Josh Hart is also eligible for a contract extension. Knicks owner James Dolan has made it clear that the franchise does not intend to cross the second apron, meaning any additional significant contract could impact roster construction.

Towns has one guaranteed year remaining on his current deal, followed by a player option. If he chooses not to exercise it, he could become an unrestricted free agent next summer.

Towns has one guaranteed year left on his contract before a player option next summer, after which he can become a free agent, Charania explained. And Josh Hart has already hinted that as we get closer to February around the trade deadline, the temperature could rise if Towns and Hart himself do not receive contract extensions.

Charania concluded by emphasizing the distance between the sides: Right now, the sides are not close.
