Teachers' Union Strikes at Kiryat Motzkin Kindergarten After Grandfather Attacks Staff
The Teachers' Union declared a strike at a Kiryat Motzkin kindergarten after a child's grandfather verbally abused and threatened the teacher at the gate. Parents had to intervene, and a police complaint has been filed.
The Israeli education system has recorded another severe incident of violence against teaching staff. The Teachers' Union (Histadrut HaMorim) announced a two-hour strike at a municipal kindergarten in Kiryat Motzkin on Monday morning. The strike was called after the grandfather of one of the children attacked the staff, shouted threats, and acted violently, forcing other parents to intervene and separate him from the educators.
Confrontation at the Kindergarten Gates
The incident occurred shortly before the end of the school day. The grandfather arrived at the kindergarten gate before the scheduled pickup time. He began ringing the bell repeatedly, banging on the gate, and shaking it violently, despite being told that children are released only at the designated hour in an orderly manner.
When the kindergarten teacher came out and asked him to wait patiently, the man began shouting, cursing, and humiliating her. Among other insults, he yelled: "Who do you think you are, you absolute zero?!" Once the gate opened, the grandfather advanced threateningly toward the teacher while waving his hands, forcing other parents present at the scene to stand as a barrier between him and the staff.
The incident took place in front of the children and their parents, causing panic, fear, and crying among the toddlers. The Teachers' Union noted that following the incident, the teacher filed a formal complaint with the Israel Police.
"Crossing the Line"
Violence against educators and kindergarten teachers is a persistent issue in the education system, and many consider it a primary reason why teaching staff leave the profession. Anat Dadon, head of the Early Childhood Division at the Teachers' Union, stated:
"A kindergarten teacher who insists on an orderly release of children from the garden is doing exactly her job. Her responsibility is to ensure that every child leaves safely, into the right hands, and in a manner that allows full supervision of the well-being of all children."
"It is unacceptable for a family member to arrive at the kindergarten gate, exert pressure, scream, curse, shake the gate, and approach the staff in a threatening manner just because he was asked to wait a few minutes for an orderly release. This is violence, this is crossing the line, and this is a direct blow to the teacher's authority. A kindergarten is a protected educational space."
Dadon added that the Teachers' Union will stand by the kindergarten staff and act to ensure a safe, respectful, and protected working environment so they can maintain a stable educational routine for the children.
