It was impossible to miss Kelly Osbourne on the red carpet at the Grammy Awards last February. The 41-year-old arrived wearing a slightly disproportionate wig, sparking speculation and criticism over her gaunt appearance. While some assumed the hairstyle was a touching tribute to her late father, rock legend Ozzy Osbourne, who was known for a similar look, a new interview with the British newspaper The Mail on Sunday reveals that the fashion choice was actually a survival tactic.

A Shocking Realization

Osbourne confessed that the deep grief following her father's death in July of the previous year led to a drastic and alarming drop in weight. In the interview, she admitted she had not even realized how thin she had become until the fittings leading up to the ceremony:

"I had to wear that wig to hide my cheekbones. I was blind with pain, I just saw a broken person in front of me. I looked at a photo and said, 'This is scary. I didn't know I looked like that, I looked like the f***ing Crypt Keeper.' You could see every bone in my spine."

The decision to wear the wig was meant to divert media attention away from her gaunt face and spare her from intrusive questions on an already emotionally charged night. However, the tactic did little to stop the scrutiny.

Personal Turmoil and Relocation

The past year has undoubtedly been the most difficult of Osbourne's life. In addition to coping with her loss and the public backlash over her weight, she recently found herself in the midst of a messy separation from her former fiancé and the father of her child, musician Sid Wilson. In recent months, she hinted at the drama by posting (and quickly deleting) angry Instagram stories demanding child support and the return of her dogs.

This combination of family tragedy, a highly publicized breakup, and living under the harsh microscope of Hollywood prompted Osbourne to take action. Last month, she packed her bags, took her 3-year-old son, Sidney, and moved back to London.

Speaking to Hello! magazine last week, she explained the relocation:

"I was never a 'California girl.' But beyond that, I have very practical reasons for the move: I don't want to have to explain to my son what to do during an active shooter drill at school. That is a reality you have to face in America, and to me, it's just madness."

Currently, Osbourne is focusing on picking up the pieces and building a quieter, happier life for herself and Sidney in England.
