Jerusalem Police Investigate Attempted Murder After Man Thrown Into Underground Bin
Jerusalem police arrested a suspect for attempted murder after his brother was rescued from a deep underground garbage container in the Gilo neighborhood. CCTV footage revealed the criminal nature of the incident.
Jerusalem police are investigating an attempted murder following an extraordinary incident in the Gilo neighborhood, where a man was thrown into a deep underground garbage container. Newly obtained security footage has revealed the moments leading up to the rescue.
The footage shows three family members walking toward the underground bin: the suspect, his brother (who was later trapped inside), and a third minor brother. At one point, the victim is seen inside the container. Shortly after, the suspect and the minor left the scene, leaving the victim trapped inside the deep shaft.
High-Risk Rescue Operation
Fire and rescue services launched a complex operation to extract the man. Firefighters identified a severe lack of oxygen and high concentrations of explosive gases inside the underground chamber, making the rescue highly dangerous.
Rescuers had to convince the victim to wear a specialized rescue hood to supply him with breathing air while pumping fresh air into the shaft to dilute the toxic gases. Ultimately, a Jerusalem municipality crane was dispatched to lift the entire container, which weighed approximately one ton with its contents.
Criminal Turn
What initially appeared to be an unusual rescue incident quickly turned into a dramatic criminal investigation. Investigators from the Moriah station in the Jerusalem District conducted rapid inquiries, raising immediate suspicions that the man did not fall into the bin by accident.
Following the initial findings, the victim's brother was arrested. The incident is now being treated as an attempted murder. The victim was treated at the scene by MADA paramedics and evacuated to Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital in moderate condition.
