Mid-Air Medical Emergency Unites Israeli Voters on Flight to Vienna
An overnight Austrian Airlines flight from Washington to Vienna became an impromptu gathering of Israeli voters when a passenger suffered a medical emergency, drawing together doctors and volunteers heading home to cast their ballots.

Thousands of Israelis are currently returning home to cast their ballots in Tuesday's general elections, leading to extraordinary mid-air encounters. A routine overnight flight from Washington to Vienna operated by Austrian Airlines turned into a medical emergency when a passenger collapsed in the aisle.
The first to notice the distress was Regev Ben David, an Israeli researcher heading to an academic conference in Israel. Hearing calls for help, he immediately rushed to assist flight attendants in moving the passenger to a spacious emergency exit area. The flight crew then issued a public call for medical professionals on board.
Two female passengers stepped forward: Dr. Dana Gefen Doron, a rehabilitation physician, and a psychiatrist, both traveling to Israel to vote. While managing the emergency in English, the group made a striking discovery: the patient and his wife, the two doctors, and Ben David were all Israelis returning to Tel Aviv for the elections.
The sudden shift to Hebrew eased communication and comforted the patient and the astonished crew. The passenger's condition quickly stabilized, and the group shared coffee during the layover in Vienna before continuing their journey together to Israel as new friends.
This incident follows other recent dramatic flights involving Israeli travelers. Last week, an Austrian Airlines flight from Tel Aviv to Vienna was forced to divert following a bomb threat. Separately, an El Al flight from Tel Aviv to New York executed an emergency landing in Paris after a crew member fell ill.
