As the November shopping season reaches its peak, cybersecurity authorities warn of a sharp surge in online scams and fake e-commerce websites. Fraudsters increasingly leverage artificial intelligence tools to build highly convincing rogue storefronts and phishing messages with minimal technical effort.

Data released by the Israel National Cyber Directorate indicates a 41% surge in detected fraudulent shopping infrastructures during 2026. Authorities identified 415 rogue attack infrastructures targeting consumers since the beginning of the year, compared to 294 throughout 2025. In the past month alone, 58 malicious infrastructures were uncovered, each potentially exposing tens of thousands of shoppers to financial theft before takedown.

How to Identify Suspicious Online Stores

Experts advise shoppers to exercise strict caution before entering credit card details:

  • Examine the URL: Fraudulent sites often mimic legitimate brands down to the logo and design. Carefully inspect the address bar for subtle character substitutions or mismatched domains.

  • Avoid unsolicited links: Do not click on promotional links received via SMS, WhatsApp, or email. Always navigate to the official store directly.

  • Verify vendor credentials: Look for clear customer service contacts, business addresses, and return policies. Check third-party seller identities on major retail platforms.

  • Utilize reverse image search: Use tools like Google Lens to verify product imagery across multiple platforms and spot suspicious duplicate listings.

  • Beware of extreme discounts: Unusually low prices paired with artificial urgency, such as countdown timers, are classic manipulation tactics.

Safe Payment and AI Integration Practices

When utilizing AI assistants for price comparisons or shopping recommendations, users must ensure they never share sensitive credentials, passwords, or credit card details within chat interfaces. Furthermore, authorities recommend using secure, well-established payment methods, limiting financial exposure with dedicated single-use virtual cards, and avoiding unnecessary credit card storage on unfamiliar retail sites.

Shoppers who encounter fraudulent websites or fall victim to cyber scams are urged to report the incidents immediately to the Israel National Cyber Directorate via hotline 119, WhatsApp, or the official online reporting portal.
