Indian Court Drops Criminal Case Against Israeli National Over Stray Cartridge
An Indian court in Himachal Pradesh dropped criminal charges against 24-year-old Israeli national Yonatan Levi, whose arrest followed the discovery of a live cartridge in his luggage at a local airport.

A court in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh has dropped criminal proceedings against a 24-year-old Israeli national who was arrested after a live cartridge was discovered in his luggage at an airport. The ruling concludes a legal ordeal that began last month.
The incident took place on September 15, 2026, during security screenings at Gaggal Airport in Kangra. According to Kangra Superintendent of Police Kulbhushan Verma, the passenger, identified as Yonatan Levi, was planning to board a SpiceJet flight to Delhi when security personnel found the ammunition in his bag. Levi was subsequently arrested and held under the Arms Act.
Following his arrest, the military attaché at the Israeli Embassy in New Delhi intervened, confirming that Levi serves in reserve duty and explaining that the live round had likely been left inadvertently in a bag previously used during his military service. He was released on bail on September 23 after posting a 100,000 rupee bond.
In its final ruling issued last week, the court emphasized that continuing the prosecution would constitute an abuse of the legal process and cause unnecessary harassment to a foreign citizen. Citing precedents involving single-bullet discoveries without a firearm, the judges stressed that weapon-related offenses require proven awareness of the presence of ammunition, leading to the full dismissal of the case.
