Man Arrested for Posing as Shin Bet Operative to Scam Partner

A 34-year-old resident of Kiryat Ata has been arrested on suspicion of posing as a Shin Bet operative operating in the Gaza Strip, using a complex web of lies to deceive a romantic partner out of thousands of shekels.

The suspect allegedly claimed that his family was killed during the October 7 massacres and that his classified security work forced him to conceal his identity. The victim, who eventually uncovered the deception, spoke to N12 about how she realized her partner was an imposter.

Uncovering the Deception

"The moment I discovered I was caught in an impersonation and fraud scheme, my goal was to expose it as quickly as possible so this wouldn't happen to other women," she said. Initially, she noticed inconsistencies in his personal details, but chose to continue the relationship to gather evidence.

When there is a noble goal, and in the end I want to achieve something very significant and impactful, then it makes it happen, she explained regarding her decision to stay in contact while gathering proof.

Police Investigation and Arrest

Following her complaint, the Northern District Police launched an investigation. Authorities revealed that the suspect never served in the Shin Bet or any security agency, his family is alive, and he actually resides with them in the Krayot area. On September 17, the investigation went public, and the suspect was arrested. His detention was extended until September 27 on suspicion of impersonation, fraud, and sexual offenses as the investigation continues.
