Iga Swiatek advanced to the third round of the US Open
The world number eight defeated Nadia Podoroska 6:3, 6:1 and advanced to the next stage. Naomi Osaka also moved forward after a 6:2, 5:7, 6:1 victory over Katerina Siniakova.
The second round of the US Open continued this Thursday as Iga Swiatek and Naomi Osaka advanced to the next stage. Swiatek, ranked eighth in the world, faced Argentine Nadia Podoroska, who, despite being 449th in the WTA rankings, caused a major upset in 2020 by reaching the Roland Garros semi-finals. It was Swiatek who stopped her then, and she repeated the feat at Flushing Meadows. While not at her absolute peak, Swiatek secured the first set with a single break. In the second set, she broke her opponent's serve twice, completing the 6:3, 6:1 victory in one hour and 11 minutes.
Naomi Osaka also advanced to the third round after a 6:2, 5:7, 6:1 victory over Katerina Siniakova (42nd in the world). Siniakova, a ten-time Grand Slam doubles champion, once again failed to make a deep run in singles. Osaka dominated the first set but experienced a lapse in tension in the second, losing a 5:3 lead to drop the set 5:7. In the third set, the Japanese player regained her focus and dominated throughout to secure her spot in the next round.
