At the Biblical Zoo in Jerusalem, they celebrated with excitement four months ago the birth of Chaya - the first-ever orangutan infant born at the zoo. The infant received the name Chaya, which means "light" in Indonesian, after becoming the undisputed star of the zoo.
Tomorrow, Wednesday, August 19, International Orangutan Day will be marked worldwide. This day is intended to raise awareness of the difficult situation of these apes in the wild and to encourage conservation actions. While in the wild, orangutan populations are shrinking, the birth of Chaya at the Biblical Zoo constitutes a significant event in global conservation efforts and brings hope to those working for animal welfare.
On this occasion, visitors to the zoo are invited to watch Chaya and his mother Soga at the orangutan exhibit, where they will be able to see up close the special bond between mother and infant. The zoo staff recommends that visitors arrive in the morning hours, when the monkeys' activity is at its peak and the chance to see Chaya in his first movements is the highest.
The new infant attracts many visitors who are excited to witness his moving moments alongside his mother and her devoted upbringing. In recent days, the little infant has begun to show a bit of independence - he gets down from her for moments, but very quickly returns to her embrace. The zoo staff says that Chaya even tries to snatch food from his mother sometimes.
