The Global Zoom column presents the most prominent international stories of the week, ranging from major diplomatic developments to significant security alerts.

Russia Threatens Nuclear Action Over Kaliningrad

Russia warned NATO that it would be prepared to use nuclear weapons if the alliance attempts to cut off Kaliningrad from the rest of its territory. Kaliningrad is a small Russian exclave on the Baltic Sea, situated between NATO member states. According to a diplomatic document sent by Moscow to NATO member states and revealed by Reuters, Moscow accused NATO of a "dangerous and reckless course" that increases the risk of direct armed conflict.

NATO responded firmly. Secretary-General Mark Rutte stated that the alliance is defensive and urged Moscow to halt its nuclear threats. Meanwhile, European intelligence officials noted that this is the first time since the Cold War that Russia has issued such direct nuclear threats regarding regional supply routes.

British Intelligence Exposes Chinese Funding of Researchers

Britain's MI5 intelligence agency published an unprecedented security alert warning that a Chinese organization has been funding academic research in sensitive fields such as artificial intelligence on behalf of Beijing's security services. More than 100 academics in the UK reportedly contributed to projects financed by the Chinese institution, raising serious concerns regarding national security.

Home Security Minister Dan Jarvis announced that he wrote to all university heads in the UK to ensure that staff sever all ties with the implicated Chinese organization. The Chinese embassy in London rejected the accusations, calling them completely fabricated and baseless.

US Forces Complete Withdrawal From Iraq

US forces completed their withdrawal from their remaining bases in Iraq this week, a move that Iran and its allies have portrayed as a historic victory. The withdrawal concludes more than two decades of American military presence in the country, a conflict marked by significant casualties and complex regional dynamics.

Security experts in Iraq warn that the departure could grant Tehran and its allied factions nearly unchecked operational freedom while raising concerns over potential security vacuums. The drawdown follows agreements initiated under prior administrations and implemented as regional tensions remain elevated.
