Galatasaray Fans Display Anti-Israel Banners During Champions League Match
Galatasaray fans displayed anti-Israel and pro-Palestinian banners during their Champions League match against Stuttgart, reigniting debates over political messaging in European football stadiums.

Galatasaray supporters again used the Champions League stage on Tuesday to display anti-Israel and pro-Palestinian banners during their home match against Stuttgart in the tournament's fourth round. Among the banners hoisted in the Istanbul stadium stands was a sign reading, "May humanity unite, may Zionism be erased," alongside slogans such as "If Jerusalem is not free, the world is captive" and "Humanity has lost its conscience in Gaza." The images spread rapidly across social media, drawing widespread coverage in Turkish media outlets.
Turkish sports portals praised the stadium display. The website A Spor published an article titled "Support for Palestine from Galatasaray Stands: Meaningful Banners in Stuttgart Match," stating that club fans delivered a message of support to the Palestinian people that caught global attention. The Fotomaç website ran a similar headline, declaring that Galatasaray stands had not forgotten Palestine.
The political messaging at Galatasaray matches is part of a recurring pattern. In April 2024, during a league match against Kocalispor, fans unfurled the exact same banner reading "May humanity unite, may Zionism be erased." In October 2025, during a Champions League fixture against Bodo Glimt, supporters displayed a massive tifo in Palestinian flag colors alongside the slogan "Stop genocide," which was subsequently promoted on the club's official X account. Similar incidents occurred during matches against Liverpool and Barcelona.
Turkish media reports noted that the displays have sparked debates across Europe regarding potential disciplinary actions by UEFA. According to Article 16(2)(e) of UEFA's disciplinary regulations, clubs can face sanctions for transmitting provocative, ideological, or political messages unsuited for a sports event. However, UEFA has not issued any condemnation or punishment against Galatasaray thus far, as each case is evaluated individually.
Political rhetoric has also emanated from club leadership. In December 2025, Galatasaray President Dursun Ozbek urged fans to join a pro-Palestinian demonstration in Istanbul, declaring that supporters refuse to grow accustomed to silence while standing against oppression.
