The tensions erupted in late July when France's permanent mission to the UN published a critical post on X. The statement condemned the U.S. for voting alongside nations like Russia and North Korea against extending the mandate of UN human rights chief Volker Turk. The original post claimed that the United States was isolated and no longer a global beacon for human rights.

U.S. Retaliation and Resolution
Washington responded swiftly to the remarks. U.S. representatives staged a walkout during a UN Security Council session when the French ambassador took the floor, and the administration subsequently blocked the appointment of the new French ambassador to Washington.
