A 35-year-old police officer in Florida has been arrested on charges of taking over the home of a 71-year-old man who died more than four years ago. According to investigators, Brian Louis Seguros allegedly stole the dead man's identity to renovate the property and claim ownership.

The case dates back to July 11, 2022, when Lauderhill police officers responded to a welfare check at the home of Dennis West. Officers found West dead from natural causes. Investigators allege that Seguros, who was among the responding officers, soon began scheming to take control of the property.

Authorities stated that Seguros falsely claimed to be a friend of the deceased with no surviving family. He allegedly used police databases to gather West's personal information, forged his signature on municipal renovation permits, and paid utility bills and property taxes in West's name.

Between August 2022 and February 2025, Seguros invested over $200,000 of his own money into renovating the $400,000 home. In February 2025, Seguros and his partner filed documents claiming possession of the property since August 2022 in an apparent bid to establish legal ownership.

The scheme unraveled in August 2025 when a real estate firm that purchased the home from West's legal heirs sent a representative to take possession. Seguros surrendered the keys but filed a civil lawsuit demanding reimbursement for the renovations, which triggered a criminal investigation.

Seguros was arrested on October 20 and charged with five felonies, including official misconduct, fraudulent use of personal identification of a deceased person, and unlawful use of a database. He was released on a $25,000 bond after appearing in court.
