From Olympic Glory to the Trash: The Tragic Fall of Felix Savon
Olympic boxing legend Felix Savon was recently filmed allegedly searching for food in garbage bins, exposing the harsh poverty retired athletes face in Cuba despite his unwavering loyalty to the regime.

Felix Savon, one of the greatest amateur boxers in history with three Olympic gold medals and six consecutive world championships, has recently sparked controversy. A viral video allegedly shows the Cuban legend rummaging through garbage bins for food, highlighting the grim reality of retired athletes in Cuba. Despite turning down multi-million dollar offers from promoters like Don King to remain loyal to Fidel Castro's regime, Savon now faces extreme poverty, receiving a meager monthly pension that barely covers basic needs amidst severe economic sanctions.
However, public sympathy is complicated by Savon's dark past. In 2018, he was sentenced to 11 years in prison for sexual assaults against a minor under the age of 12, though he was released on parole in 2024. While professional athletes losing fortunes is not uncommon due to poor financial management or lavish lifestyles—as seen with former NBA star Delonte West or legendary boxers struggling after retirement—Savon's plight underscores a systemic betrayal by the very state he served and idolized throughout his unmatched athletic career.
