A train carrying European officials was halted near the Polish border after a Russian drone strike, prompting sharp reactions from Warsaw and new demands from Washington regarding Russian oil facilities.
A train carrying former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, the security adviser to German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and several European officials was stopped near the Polish border after a Russian drone struck a passenger train minutes later. No injuries were reported.
The special chartered train was carrying diplomats returning from a security conference in Kyiv. Since the war began, all land and rail routes through Poland have served as the primary transit corridor for Western leaders visiting Ukraine.
Border Strike and European Response
The targeted train was traveling from Kyiv to Warsaw with 206 passengers on board. The drone struck the locomotive roughly two kilometers from the Polish border, though advance warnings allowed passengers to evacuate safely.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Russia of deliberately targeting civilian infrastructure and supply routes. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk convened an emergency session, scrambling fighter jets to secure the airspace.
Oil Prices and US Demands
Amid soaring fuel prices in the United States ahead of the midterms, US President Donald Trump demanded that Kyiv halt its drone strikes on Russian oil refineries.
"Mr. Zelensky needs to do one thing, stop destroying diesel in Russia," Trump told reporters during a visit to Ireland.
Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts led by Washington have stalled, though Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov indicated that talks could potentially resume in October.
