EuroLeague? Russell Westbrook continues to wait for an NBA offer
In the US, several candidates that might sign the veteran star were reviewed, but according to ESPN, the most likely option remains Sacramento. The point guard is taking his time.
Russell Westbrook has yet to find a team for the upcoming season, and while rumors of a sensational move to the EuroLeague surfaced about a week and a half ago, it seems that the former league MVP continues to wait for the right offer that will keep him in the best league in the world.
According to ESPN, the most realistic option currently on the table is a return to Sacramento. The Kings are open to a reunion with the 37-year-old point guard, who played for them last season, but the club understands that Westbrook will not necessarily be thrilled with a more limited role behind the intriguing rookie Darius Acuff.
Westbrook proved last season that he is still capable of contributing at a high level. He started in 58 games, averaged 15.2 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 6.7 assists, and also served as an important figure for the young players on the roster. The Kings' general manager, Scott Perry, even admitted that Westbrook "played at a higher level" than the minimum contract Sacramento can offer him.
Despite this, it seems that the point guard, who was mentioned as a candidate for Hapoel Tel Aviv among others, is in no rush to make a decision. Last summer, he also waited a long time, examined his options, and only during training camp did he finalize his future. According to ESPN, there is no urgent timeline for him to sign this time either.
Meanwhile, several other teams have been mentioned as possible destinations. "Complex" identified Detroit, Cleveland, and Boston as teams that might be a fit. The Pistons are looking for depth behind Cade Cunningham and could see him as an experienced temporary solution, while Cleveland could offer him a role off the bench alongside his longtime friend James Harden. The Celtics were also mentioned as an option due to their desire to change their style of play and add more drives to the paint, alongside Westbrook's close connection with Paul George.
On the "Fansided" website, additional names were raised, including Washington, Miami, Utah, and Charlotte. The Wizards were even mentioned as a team that expressed interest in a reunion with Westbrook, who had already led them to the playoffs in the past. In Charlotte, on the other hand, he could receive a relatively large role due to the lack of a natural and experienced point guard on the roster following the trade of LaMelo Ball.
