Israeli Musician and Singer Erez Halevy Passes Away at 71
Renowned Israeli musician and songwriter Erez Halevy has passed away at 71. Best known for timeless 1980s hits like "Kach Bara Otch HaTeva", he left a lasting mark on local culture.

The renowned Israeli musician and creator Erez Halevy passed away yesterday (Saturday) at the age of 71. Halevy is remembered as one of Israel's most unique voices of the 1980s, with prominent songs like "Kach Bara Otch HaTeva", "HaDayagim", and "HaLayla" becoming an integral part of the local soundtrack. He leaves behind three children.
Early Beginnings and Musical Breakthrough
Halevy was born in 1954 in the Sha'arayim neighborhood of Rehovot, and began playing the guitar at the age of 15, influenced by the Beatles, Bob Dylan, and James Taylor. In the early 1980s, he participated in a young talent competition hosted by Matti Caspi at the Shamaim club in Tel Aviv, alongside Meir Banai. Caspi was deeply impressed by his talent and decided to produce his debut album.
In 1984, the album "HaLayla" was released, featuring songs entirely written and composed by Halevy, while Caspi took charge of musical production, arrangements, and instrumental performance. The album blended soft rock, folk, and Mizrahi influences, receiving extensive radio airplay and yielding some of his most enduring hits.
Cultural Legacy and Self-Acceptance
One of the songs most closely associated with Halevy is "Kach Bara Otch HaTeva", which over the years became an anthem for self-acceptance and personal freedom. In a 2008 interview, he shared that he wrote the track in response to early criticism regarding why a singer of Yemenite descent chose to perform Western-style music rather than traditional Mizrahi sounds. The song later received a celebrated cover by Ivri Lider, was featured in a film by Tomer Heyman, and became embraced by the LGBTQ+ community.
Despite the triumph of his first album, Halevy struggled to replicate that commercial peak. His second album, "Matzav Beynayim", was released in 1994 without matching the success of its predecessor. In 2008, he returned with the album "HaShaar Nishpat", and in 2012, he initiated a tribute project featuring artists such as Ehud Banai, Kobi Oz, and Ariel Zilber.
