A severe and embarrassing oversight has occurred within the Ministry of Education as teachers and principals discovered outdated guidelines regarding the October 7 national memorial day. The director-general's circular mistakenly included phrasing expressing a wish for the return of hostages, implying they had not yet been released, long after all hostages had returned to Israel.

School administrators sharply criticized the incident, calling it a negligent lapse of attention regarding one of the most sensitive and traumatic events in the nation's history.

"This conduct sends a particularly problematic message, precisely on a day meant to commemorate the events of October 7, the hostages who returned, and those who did not return," a school principal stated.

Memorial Activities in Educational Institutions

This week, the educational system is marking the national memorial day for October 7 with ceremonies, discussion circles, and educational activities across schools, kindergartens, and non-formal education frameworks nationwide.

The core themes designated by the ministry include:

  • Memory and Devotion: Ceremonies focusing on the names, faces, and life stories of the fallen and murdered.

  • Heroism and Mutual Guarantee: Discussions on the acts of bravery, rescue, and solidarity demonstrated by security forces, citizens, and communities since October 7.

  • Emotional Discourse: Age-appropriate psychological guidance led by educational counseling services to help students process emotions.

  • Rehabilitation and Revival: Focusing on community recovery, volunteering, and strengthening identity through tours of the Gaza envelope and the Tkuma region.

Ministry of Education Response

In response, the Ministry of Education stated that it views the commemoration of October 7 and the ongoing war as a supreme educational and national duty.

"The director-general's circular has been updated and published, while final adjustments are being completed on materials that will be fully distributed to educational teams ahead of the memorial events," the ministry's statement read.
