The seemingly innocent habit of sleeping with a dog in bed can turn into a real nightmare. Although a Canadian study found that sleeping with a pet provides a sense of security and calm, many dog owners report the exact opposite experience, including severe sleep disturbances and real health risks that most of us are completely unaware of.

The dog, sleeping deeply in the most inconvenient spot, prevents its owners from stretching their legs or covering themselves properly. Throughout the night, the disturbances continue with aggressive paw licking, scratching, or nighttime walks across the mattress, making continuous night sleep an impossible mission.

Beyond sleep disruption, the biggest danger is health-related. Professor Primrose Freestone, a clinical microbiology expert from the University of Leicester, warns that "dogs sleeping on beds poses a real hygienic risk, as dogs are known to carry human bacterial pathogens in their mouths." These are bacteria that can transfer to bedding and endanger your health.

In light of the risk, the professional recommendation is unequivocal. According to Prof. Freestone, bedding that has come into contact with dogs requires much more frequent washing—every two days—in hot water at a temperature of 60 degrees Celsius with added detergent. By comparison, bedding in a bed without pets requires washing only once a week.
