Novak Djokovic Suffers Shock Defeat to Hubert Hurkacz at Shanghai Masters
Novak Djokovic suffered a surprising second-round defeat at the Shanghai Masters, losing in straight sets 6-4, 6-3 to Poland's Hubert Hurkacz.
Just three days after winning the Beijing tournament and lifting the 102nd title of his career, Novak Djokovic suffered a surprising defeat on Friday in the second round of the Shanghai Masters. The Serbian player fell 6-4, 6-3 to Poland's Hubert Hurkacz, who defeated him for the first time in his career after eight consecutive losses in their previous meetings.
Hubert Hurkacz claimed a straight-sets victory over Novak Djokovic in just one hour and 27 minutes at the Shanghai Masters.
"It is a special evening. I have been playing against Novak for about seven years, and until now I had not managed to beat him," Hurkacz said. "He is a tremendous champion who has been at the top of the world for so many years. To compete against him is a very difficult task, but it is also a pleasure to share the court with a legend."
Both players arrived in Shanghai after reaching finals in China. While Djokovic triumphed in Beijing, Hurkacz reached the final in Chengdu a week earlier, bouncing back from a recent adductor injury.
