Heavy loss in Israeli sports: Team star passed away at just 19 years old
British cyclist Finlay Tarling, who joined the Israeli team and continued to ride for it after its operations were relocated, was killed in a severe accident in Portugal at only 19 years old. The race was immediately interrupted.
Heavy loss in the world of sports: The prestigious "Volta a Portugal" race was interrupted on Friday following the tragic death of young British cyclist Finlay Tarling during the eighth stage, which was supposed to span approximately 167 kilometers from Melgaço to Fafe. Tarling, who was only 19 at the time of his death, was involved in a severe accident that led to the immediate neutralization of the race and the cancellation of all closing celebrations planned in Fafe.
According to initial reports in Portugal, the fatal accident occurred when a private vehicle traveling in the opposite direction — outside the official race convoy — struck the British cyclist. However, the Portuguese Cycling Federation and the competition organizers have so far limited themselves to an official statement defining the incident as a "severe accident," while expressing deep sorrow and condolences to his family.
"We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of young British cyclist Finlay Tarling. We send our condolences to his family, friends and everyone at the NSN Development Team."
From a promising talent to a painful tragedy: Tarling, born in October 2006 and the younger brother of Joshua Tarling (a rider for the INEOS Grenadiers team), was considered a specialist in time trials. In 2025, he joined the Israeli team "Israel-Premier Tech". After pro-Palestinian harassment and protests led to the club relocating its operations to Switzerland and changing its name to NSN Development Team ahead of the 2026 season, Tarling continued to ride in its ranks.

The NSN team paid tribute to him with a broken heart:
"Finn was a very beloved member of the team, but above all, he was a son, a brother, and a friend to so many. We will miss him dearly. We send our deepest condolences to his parents Michael and Dawn, and to his brother Josh."
