Disappointment for the European champion: Gorbenko finished seventh in the 200m individual medley final
The Israeli swimmer failed to repeat her impressive achievement and finished seventh, and then jumped into another semifinal within a few minutes. Tomer Schuster was ranked ninth in the 100m backstroke and missed the final by only 24 hundredths of a second.
Anastasia Gorbenko started this evening in a difficult marathon of two races with only a few minutes apart. Gorbenko, who arrived at the competition as the reigning European champion in the 200m individual medley, failed to repeat her medal-winning performance and finished the final heat in seventh place with a time of 2:10.70 minutes. Less than 10 minutes later, as the noticeable physical fatigue took its toll, Gorbenko returned to the water for the 50m breaststroke semifinal. She stopped the clock at 32.50 seconds, a result that was enough for 16th place overall.
A painful miss also for Tomer Schuster: in the 100m backstroke, he was a step away from securing a spot in another final, just two days after finishing fifth in the 50m backstroke and setting a new Israeli record in the preliminaries that afternoon. Schuster finished the semifinal in ninth place with a time of 53.48 seconds — just 24 hundredths of a second away from eighth place and a ticket to the final — and will serve as the first reserve tomorrow.
200m individual medley (men): Eitan Ben Shitrit finished 10th in the semifinal (1:59.31 minutes), and Alexey Glivinskiy (Hapoel Jerusalem) was ranked 16th (2:01.53 minutes).
50m freestyle (men): Miron Cheruti was stopped in the semifinal in 14th place overall with a result of 21.87 seconds.
